The Golden Games is a national programme for older persons' that provided a platform for the elderly from Msunduzi Wards to come together and display their talents in sport, athletics and fun games. Anyone who is 60 years and older and who belongs to a club or group for older persons, qualifies to take part. The games cater for the less physically able as well as the super-fit and some competitors are as old as 85 years but look at least 50 years old!
It is for these games that Senior Citizens from many wards converged, at Wadley Stadium on Golden Wednesday of the 15th May 2013, to showcase their sporting skills in various sport codes which include athletics, soccer and many others. The main objectives of the Golden Games are, to enhance the quality of life and improve the health of older persons and to embrace active ageing. These games further create awareness of the abilities and capabilities of older persons in sport and recreational activities.
The Special Programs aims to support and increase the number of older persons participating in sport and recreational activities across the length and breadth of the Municipality. Our Senior Citizens continue to play a vital role in the society at large; that meaningful role cannot be over-emphasized. They have always made major contributions in the society including the freedom we enjoy today. For instance, millions of patients are cared for at home by their grandparents.
When these patients pass on, orphaned children left behind are mainly looked after by their grandparents. It has even become a norm in our families that caring for dependent and sick individuals is mostly done by older people, particularly older women - hence the dramatic increase of granny-headed households in many of the communities. Such initiatives as the Golden Games are therefore meant to encourage the older people to lead active and healthy lifestyles that will ensure the decrease in premature deaths, decrease in disabilities associated with chronic diseases and decrease in costs related to medical treatments care whilst creating fun-filled moment and a life of quality and quantity.
The Mayor welcomed all participants for coming in numbers to participate in the Golden Games, "I strongly believe that the Golden Games will steer us towards the right direction to uphold our values of our Constitution and further consolidate our work in eradicating adult poverty, promoting human rights and restoring the dignity of our older persons by condemning the heinous crime perpetuated against them. Let us all support all the programmes that promote the well-being of our elderly. They too, have contributed immensely in the attainment of freedom. As a result they deserve to enjoy the fruits of freedom. I wish all the participants the best of luck in various sporting codes" said the Mayor.

While sport has value in everyone's life, it is even more important in the life of a person with a disability. This is because of the rehabilitative influence sports can have, not only on the physical body but also on rehabilitating people with a disability into society. Sport teaches independence. Nowadays, people with disability participate in high performance as well as in competitive and recreational sport.
Sport for persons with disabilities is not a new concept, but its full potential as a powerful, low-cost means to foster greater inclusion and well-being for persons with disabilities is only beginning to be realized. Sport works to improve the inclusion and well-being of persons with disabilities in two ways -- by changing what communities think and feel about persons with disabilities and by changing what persons with disabilities think and feel about themselves. The first is necessary to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with disability. The second empowers persons with disabilities so that they may recognize their own potential and advocate for changes in society to enable them to fully realize it. The community impact and individual impact of sport help reduce the isolation of persons with disabilities and integrate them more fully into community life.
It was for this reason that the UMgungundlovu District Municipality hosted games for People with disabilities from all the Local Municipalities within its District. People with disabilities from all wards came in numbers to participating in the exciting games and represent Msunduzi in codes such as wheelchair racing, javelin, chess, umlabalaba, shot-put, duts and discus. As can be expected Msunduzi came back victorious - 4 first prize trophies of the 7 sporting codes that were played.
The District Mayor Cllr Bhamjee congratulated all participants and attendants for recognising their constitutional right and encouraged them to participate in all other sporting events like the upcoming Mandela race on August 25. "People with Disability need to be recognised and given opportunities not only in sports because all of their talents have gone unnoticed for decades due to the discrimination and ignorance levelled towards them" said the Mayor. The Mayor explained that the games for Persons with Disabilities were held following the resolutions taken at the Disability Summit; he encouraged the Local Municipalities to adopt the program and ensure that the Local DISSA games are held annually, that People with Disabilities are supported and have access to Sports facilities. "The Disability Framework for Local Government states clearly that we must do all in our powers to ensure that People with Disability are recognised, their needs are addressed and awareness and mainstreaming is done in order for everyone to realise that we are all equal" the Mayor said.
Msunduzi won 1st prizes in Shot-put, Wheelchair racing, Javelin and Chess.

To promote skills development and income generating opportunities for people with disabilities, the Municipality in partnership with AgriSeta offered training in plant production to a group of People with Disability. The main objective of the course was to enhance skills and opportunities for people with disabilities to become self-reliant and to show their capabilities, allowing them to re-integrate their community and be active members of society.
The training was to assist the beneficiaries to reach the economic self-reliance as entrepreneurs through farming to generate an income. The training was meant to give them the necessary tools for a better life. Speaking at the ceremony, the Mayor, Cllr Ndlela congratulated the beneficiaries and encouraged the Councillors to support People with Disability in their wards. "I congratulate the graduates who have taken it upon themselves to better their lives and seek the independence that they have a right to; I also encourage you to adopt projects such as the 'one home, one garden' that are there to for you as members of the community" he said.
Mr Mamabolo, the Skills development manager from AgriSeta congratulated the graduates and emphasised that they should have perseverance in order to succeed in agriculture, "Let me congratulate all those receiving certificates today for your tremendous achievement and for your determination to be skilled and economically active. You have set a wonderful example to others with disability as well as the able bodied, showing that education and skills development are essential to personal growth and better work opportunities" Mamabolo said. There is a big percentage of unemployment for People with disability, they rely on either social grants or support from family for survival as a result they are very much exposed to poverty. Mamabolo appealed to the Councillors and the Municipality to support farmers with land, equipment and infrastructure.
Currently the group has begun their level 2 training in Plant Production, funded by AgriSeta.
